A2 remote pilot certificate document

In brief

The A2 remote pilot certificate allows flights with drones up to 4 kg at a distance of 30 metres from uninvolved people, or 5 metres in low-speed mode. The requirements are the A1/A3 proof of competency, practical self-training and a theory exam with 30 questions at a designated examination body. At Blue Aviation you take it during the two-day in-person course at Oldenburg-Hatten airfield: €599 including flight practice and exam. The course is held in German.

Content

What you learn in the A2 course

The exam covers three subjects: meteorology, the flight performance of the drone and measures that reduce the risk on the ground. In the course you learn the material so that you can apply it before every take-off: reading the weather, judging distances and deciding whether to fly.

Suited for

Anyone who wants to fly a class C2 drone closer to people: photographers and filmmakers, estate agents, roofers and surveyors, inspection and marketing teams.

So there are no surprises on exam day, please read this information before booking.

Participation requirements

  • EU proof of competence A1/A3 (online with the LBA) must already be in place before the A2 theory exam – it is a legal prerequisite for the A2 remote pilot certificate.
  • Proof of practical training (self-declaration): the practical self-study required under EU 2019/947 must be completed independently before the theory exam.
  • Minimum age 16, valid official photo ID on exam day.
  • For the A2 refresher: an existing A2 remote pilot certificate is required.

Live proctoring: what it means

The online theory exam is supervised via live proctoring (webcam and screen monitoring) – like an in-person exam with supervision, just digital.

  • Before the start: identity check using a photo ID in front of the camera.
  • During the exam: continuous video and, where applicable, screen recording, no leaving the camera frame, no other people in the room, no aids.
  • Technical requirements: working webcam & microphone, stable internet connection, quiet private room, supported browser (you'll receive details by email before your appointment).
  • Recordings are processed exclusively for exam supervision – details in our privacy policy.

As of June 2026, without guarantee. This overview does not replace legal advice; the currently applicable requirements of the LBA and EASA, as well as the terms and conditions of the online exam platform, are decisive.

At the airfield

Every exercise follows a checklist

Before every take-off you run the pre-flight check: drone, weather, flight area. After two days it is routine.

In the in-person course

You fly yourself

In the A2 in-person course everyone takes the controls themselves, with an instructor alongside. Flight practice at Oldenburg-Hatten airfield is included in the course price.

Frequently asked questions

A2 in brief

What does the A2 certificate give me?

With the A2 you may fly class C2 drones (up to 4 kg) as close as 30 metres to uninvolved people, or 5 metres in low-speed mode. Without the A2, these drones may only be flown far away from people and built-up areas.

What requirements do I need?

You need the EU proof of competence A1/A3, the "small drone licence" from the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA), and you confirm your practical self-training by self-declaration. For the A2 refresher, you need an existing A2 remote pilot certificate.

Who is the refresher for?

For anyone whose A2 certificate expires after five years, and for anyone who has not flown for a while and wants to bring their knowledge up to date. The course is in preparation.

How does the A2 exam work?

The theory exam consists of 30 single-choice questions in 45 minutes; you pass with 75% (at least 23 of 30 points). The exam language is German, available as an in-person or online exam. The online exam runs with live proctoring – details on this, as well as on the participation requirements, can be found further up this page. A failed exam can be retaken after one week.

Is Blue Aviation a recognised examination body?

Yes. Blue Aviation is an examination body designated by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) for the A2 and STS theory exams (registration number DE.PStF.015). So you learn and sit the exam in the same place.

What comes after the A2?

That depends on what you want to fly. For operations beyond visual line of sight, STS is the next step; for better footage, Creative Training. Companies with several pilots can use our consulting to set up their operation.

How much does the A2 remote pilot certificate cost?

The two-day in-person A2 course costs €599 including VAT, flight practice and the theory exam; from five participants €569 per person. The online A2 course (€129) is in preparation. In addition, the Federal Aviation Office charges a fee for issuing the certificate, currently €30.

How long is the A2 certificate valid?

Five years. According to the Federal Aviation Office it is renewed through refresher training or a new exam at a designated examination body, or by obtaining an STS certificate.

When are the next in-person A2 courses?

The current dates with free seats are listed above on this page under Upcoming in-person A2 courses. A maximum of seven people take part per date.
