U-Space: The Digital Airspace for Drones Is Coming
Inspection, surveying, delivery services, agency operations: more and more drones are in the air. To let them safely share the same airspace, the EU has created "U-space" – a digital traffic management system for unmanned aviation.
What U-space is
U-space is not a place but a bundle of digital services for clearly designated airspaces. Within such a "U-space airspace", drones register digitally, share their position and receive clearances – similar to how manned air traffic is coordinated by air traffic control, only automated and designed for unmanned systems.
The key points
- Legal basis: EU Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/664 (supplemented by 2021/665 and 2021/666), applicable since 26 January 2023.
- Designation: member states determine where U-space airspace applies.
- Core services: network identification, geo-awareness, flight authorisation and traffic information.
- Providers: certified U-space service providers (USSPs) deliver these services.
Why this matters
Until now, flights beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and dense drone traffic over an area were hard to coordinate. In U-space the participants know about each other, and flights are authorised digitally in advance.
What this means for operators
- Mandatory digital services: in U-space airspace, operators use the prescribed services – from registration to real-time position reporting.
- New operations become plannable: where a U-space has been established, flights beyond visual line of sight can be coordinated with other traffic.
- Check technology and procedures: drone and operating procedures must be able to use the U-space services. Our STS training and our consulting help you prepare.
